Mittelhochdeutsche Begriffsdatenbank (MHDBDB)

Artikel von Paul F. Schaffner (pfs@umich.edu) für die Liste MEDTEXTL (30 Mai 1995).
  1. OBJECTIVE

A fully lemmatized searchable index to standard editions of many MHG works, including access by conceptual categories.

  2. CONTENTS

About 110 works, containing over a million text lines, of which about 16 works are indexed by concept so far, the remainder only by text-string.

  3. ACCESS

    Free, via TELNET OPIE.BGSU.EDU (129.1.2.3).

Then identify yourself by name and institution, as requested.

    Main menu:

    1. INDEX DATEI
Text db with frequency and text-reference retrieval
    2. TEXT DATEI
      Text db with text-line retrieval
    3. BEGRIFFSWOERTERBUCH
    4. BEENDEN

    (1) and (2) are interim solutions until (3) is fully operational. Truncation in (1) or (2) is achieved by placing an ellipsis before or after the word in question: "held..." yields suffixed forms; "...held" retrieves prefixed forms; "...held..." yields forms that are both, e.g. "be-held-et." Hitting return takes you from one hit to the next. "Zurueck" returns to a previous hit; "Abbruch" returns to a previous menu level. Exit the database from the main menu.

  4. TEXT ENCODING

    Character........rendered by

a-umlaut.........{ (left curly bracket) A-umlaut.........[ (left square bracket) o-umlaut........./ (front slash) O-umlaut.........\ (back slash) u-umlaut.........} (right curly bracket) U-umlaut.........] (right square bracket) sz...............~ (tilde) long mark........^ (circumflex AFTER vowel, e.g. "ma^ne")

  5. BEGRIFFSWOERTERBUCH

This option is complex enough that it is more easily attempted than described. Suffice it to say that one can trace one's way down semantic trees to concepts sufficiently specific ("fabulous beasts"); that one can view the results either as a list of frequencies (over all or someof the works indexed), or as a list of retrieved texts; and that one proceeds throughout by menus.

Operating in the conceptual dictionary involves a different coding scheme. All text is uppercase; umlauted vowels are represented by a period (.) following the vowel; long vowels by a hyphen (-) following the vowel; and "sz" by "SZ".

Specific questions should go to Prof. Dr. Klaus M. Schmidt (schmidt@opie.bgsu.edu) or Dr. Horst P. Puetz (hpuetz@opie.bgsu.edu or ger07@rz.uni-kiel.d400.de).

  6. WORKS INCLUDED

This is the full list, with edition information somewhat abridged, handed out at the K'zoo session. I realize that the dates given are often those of reprints or re-editions, but have reproduced them as received, without any attempt to make them consistent. Apologies for any typos and misunderstandings that I have perpetratred or perpetuated.
